    In particular, cobalt's very high melting point and mechanical strength at high temperatures has seen its extensive use in what is termed 'superalloys'. These are alloys that retain mechanical strength at high temperatures. Because of its impressive properties cobalt is an important component in wear resistant and corrosive resistant alloys. Cobalt-rich manganese deposits on the Pacific seamounts are considered to supply a potential cobalt reserve in the next century (Halbach, ; Cronan, ; Manheim, ). The cobalt-rich manganese deposits were found not only on seamounts, but also on island slope (Halbach and Manheim, ; Cronan et aI., ).

Alloying, cold working and heat-treating can all be utilised to tailor the properties of aluminium. On ageing, the change in properties in a quenched material is more marked and, in particular, the mechanical properties often show striking modifications. For example, the tensile strength of Duralumin (i.e. an aluminium–4% copper alloy containing magnesium, silicon and manganese) may be raised from to GN m −2 while that of a Cu.
